Sts. Felicity and Perpetua - Youth
These holy companions were martyrs in the year 203 in North Africa during the reign of emperor Severus. Both women were mothers-- Perpetua had a nursing infant while Felicity delivered her child in prison only days before her martyrdom. Vivia Perpetua, a noble woman, gives us the great treasure of the account of her imprisonment, and that of the slave Felicity and their companions, in her own words; it is one of the earliest surviving accounts of its kind. After suffering many torments in prison, the greatest of which was having her child taken from her, Perpetua was granted visions which she shared with her fellow prisoners to their mutual encouragement and consolation. After repeated attempts to persuade the companions to abandon the faith, Perpetua and Felicity were sent to the arena to be attacked by a wild heifer; they survived to be killed by gladiators. So great was their courage in their last moments that the eye witness who completed the account of their martyrdom said of Perpetua, “possibly such a woman could not have been slain unless she herself had willed it.” They are patronesses of mothers, expectant women, widows, and ranchers. The original watercolor illustration is captured with quality on this soft cotton tee.
