St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the Lily of the Mohawks, was the first Native American to be canonized. She suffered the great loss of her family during a smallpox epidemic when she was four. She survived the illness but was left permanently scarred. As a young woman, she was known to be diligent, patient, hardworking, and steadfast. After her conversion at nineteen, in keeping with the ways of the Mohicans, she was known for many acts of self-mortification and denial. Kateri Tekakwitha died of illness on April 17, 1680, she was 24 years old. She is the patroness of people in exile, Native Americans, ecology, and the environment.  The original watercolor illustration is captured with quality on this soft cotton tee.
