Fr. Emil Kapaun - Kids T-Shirts
Father Emil Kapaun was born and raised on the
farmlands of Kansas. He was ordained to
the priesthood in 1940 and served as an army chaplain during the latter half of
WWII. In 1950, when North Korea invaded their southern neighbors, he was
deployed with the First Cavalry Division and quickly became known for his acts
of selflessness and courage. In November of the same year, during the Battle of
Unsan, Fr. Kapaun was credited with rescuing 30 wounded men and administering
Last Rites to many others on the battlefield. When it became clear that the
battle had been lost, he had a chance to escape to safety but chose to remain
with the wounded. During his subsequent capture and march to the prisoner of
war camp, he saved a fellow soldier from execution and aided many others. In
the camp, he frequently stole food and supplies from the guards to sustain the
prisoners and became renown for providing both spiritual and physical care for
any who needed him. Seven months after his capture, Father Kapaun became ill
with pneumonia and a blood clot in his right leg, he was denied medical
assistance and died on May 23, 1951. Two
years later, his fellow soldiers were released and brought home with them the
story of his heroic charity and courage. On April 11, 2013 Father Kapaun was
posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. He was named a Servant of God in 1993;
the happy cause for his canonization is ongoing. The
original watercolor illustration is captured with quality on this soft
cotton tee.
